Cheapest coffee near you

Across the 710 cafes we hold a small flat white price for, coffee runs from $3.00 to $8.00, with a median of $4.50. A small long black runs from $3.30 to $8.00 across 558 cafes, median $4.50.

Those are the two drinks we measure everything on. One drink, one size, one milk, so a price in Geelong means the same thing as a price in Newcastle. Prices are read off the menus cafes publish and confirmed by people who paid them, across 562 suburbs.

Cheapest suburbs

Only suburbs where we hold enough prices to publish a page, ranked on the cheapest small flat white or small long black we hold. A cheaper short black or piccolo in the same suburb does not count, because it is not the same cup. Each links to every cafe we track there.

Where these prices come from

A menu we read, a photo a machine read and a person telling us what they paid are not the same kind of evidence, so the mix is published rather than blended away.

How this is measured

  • Two drinks only. Every price on this page is a small flat white with regular milk, or a small long black. A cafe may sell a cheaper short black or piccolo, and we hold plenty of them, but they are not the same cup and comparing them across suburbs would be misleading.
  • One price per cafe. A venue we hold nine prices for does not outvote one we hold a single price for.
  • A median needs at least 5 cafes. Below that we say so and publish nothing, rather than quoting a middle value from a handful of venues.
  • Prices sourced from a cafe's online shop are left out. A bag of beans is not a cup of coffee, and those pages priced one as the other.
  • Regions are the nearest population centre within a set radius. Resident numbers are approximate and are used to order this page, never as a denominator.
  • Covering 11,337 cafes, of which 1,038 cafes have a price, across 132 suburbs with enough data to publish.
